#37 August 09 Events

by AREA   |   Published July 29, 2009
Hey everyone
We hope the summer is going great. This is a busy month for AREA. First off on Friday we are participating in the 5th Annual Printers Ball, organized by Poetry Magazine. We hope that you come out on Friday from 5-11pm to Columbia College to pick up tons of locally produced magazines and celebrate local print culture and independent media (details are here http://www.printersball.org/).

Secondly, this month we kick off a huge event series to accompany the 8th issue of AREA that was released last May: "Everbody's Got Money Issues". This series is mostly taking place @ Mess Hall and is organized by our designer and advisor Jerome Grand
in collaboration with Mess Hall, and such folks as Public Square, Kristen Cox, Melville House Books, Insight Arts, Backstory Cafe, Neighborhood Writing Alliance, and the Hideout. Please come check out the events and look for a full list of August/September events that make up the whole event series in coming days. See those events marked in red below.

We hope to see you out and about sooner than later.
Much thanks for your support. Thanks to those who came out July 13 for the AREA 4th Birthday. We had a blast celebrating and made $720 towards our next issue through the generous profit-sharing of Danny's Tavern and Joe Proulx's Peace Party.
Thanks!
- your peoples at AREA Chicago

Upon completion of 32 hours of training, you will be certified as a Circle Keeper

Peace Circles brings people together to build community based on respect and responsibility.  Peace Circles are being used in many agencies and schools around the country and the world. They provide an opportunity for youth and adults to come together in a productive and supportive way. This process enhances communication skills, teaches new ways to resolve conflicts, improves relationships, and is an effective way to celebrate achievements. The key to developing a peaceful environment is to learn about one another and build trust.

Circle training is interactive.  The training models the practices you will be relying upon on completion of the training.  Come and form the circle; respect, openness, creativity, teamwork, listening, sharing stories, confidentiality, and restorative principles are links in the circle chain.

Palestine revisited

Tirtza Even and Toby Millman each translate their experiences of personal encounters in Palestine into 3-D animations and cut paper works, spanning moments between 1998 and 2008. Using text that reflects on and questions the coherence and perception of the visual material, incorporating both humor and nuanced prose, each project attempts to address the characteristics and consequences of the ongoing Israeli occupation on life in Palestine.

Fruit of Zaloom performed by Paul Zaloom

August 22-23 at Links Hall, 3435 North Sheffield, Second Floor, Chicago, IL 60657

Fruit of Zaloom covers a myriad of contemporary subjects, including the “War on Drugs,” gay adoption, moral hypocrisy, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” mandatory minimum sentencing, the Log Cabin Republican Club, police brutality, and last but not least: death! Directed by Randee Trabitz, this triple play places Zaloom, a gay Arab American with both Catholic and Protestant Irish blood, squarely into the middle of the culture wars that continue to be waged across the American landscape. Humor, Zaloom's weapon of choice, is used to disarm and encourage, to melt the pessimism away, and to hurt the face from a cornucopia of amusing fabulousness. Fruit of Zaloom is made possible in part because of collaboration with Science Chicago. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students call 773.281.0824 or visit www.linkshall.org details.
